For me this photograph just flaunts disappointment. The subtlety of the fleeting birds in the background and the purity in the girls posture give the impression that an emotional storm could be brewing. Birds alway fleet at the sign of disaster, it seems that this is happening in this image. The girl look stubborn in her stance and holding the cake as if it is her last offering. It is as if she is about to give up; sacrifice herself to the storm.
This has a very dystopic feel. The backdrop reminds me of Gladiator, when Russel Crowe has those flashbacks of his family being hunted down by the Romans. The flocking birds look like they're escaping something. The lighting is super theatrical, the same vivid lighting I see before a hugemungous storm is coming (I'm not sure if it's just me). So it looks like the girl's been abandoned before the storm (her hair seems to be blowing in the breeze that's picking up), and the birds are flying away. Oh, and they're eating her cake.
Yum!
On a more relevant note, she's holding onto the cake in a rather listless way, as if she's given up on something.
So maybe she's given up on escaping from the storm? Or in a broader, more figurative sense, given up on escaping something - not sure what that something is. But something scary and oppressing.
